Definition of a University Policy

According to University Policy 4.1, Formulation and Issuance of University Policies , university policies meet the following requirements:

  • Apply across the university
  • Comply with regulation, reduces risk
  • Enhance university's mission, operational efficiency
  • Mandate action or constraints

All official policy documents have the following characteristics:

  • Are reviewed and approved by executives
  • Are in a standard format, or “template”
  • Include procedures for compliance
  • Comprise "Principles" and "Procedures" sections
  • Carries the university seal on the first page
  • Are "owned" by university executive
Note: Some existing polices predate this policy and so are not in the standard template. Neither have they been reviewed by a committee of executive officers. Also, some academic policies have been reviewed and approved instead by the Faculty Senate.  However, they meet the characteristics enumerated above and have been approved by an executive officer.  In time, these policies will be converted to the official template and will be officially reviewed.
