 Authentication to Information Technology Resources

The University Policy Office is pleased to announce the final issuance of the previously interim University Policy 5.8, Authentication to Information Technology Resources .

This policy establishes rules for obtaining, using, changing, and terminating Cornell electronic identifiers (NetIDs), which are used to gain access to Cornell’s information technology resources.  It also specifies rules for creating, using, and reporting the suspected compromise of complex passwords that correspond to Cornell electronic identifiers. These controls help support applicable regulations governing the security and privacy of sensitive data, as well as protect Cornell’s information technology resources.

Please take some time to review the details of this policy.  More information and documentation is also available at the Office of Information Technology’s policy Web site at www.cit.cornell.edu/policy/interim/AuthenticationITR.html .

 Inventions and Related Property Rights

The University Policy Office is pleased to announce the issuance of the revised and formalized Patents policy, now titled University Policy 1.5, Inventions and Related Property Rights .

This revised policy, derived from Board of Trustee legislation, outlines the process for identifying and protecting the property rights of ideas and discoveries that arise out of the research and scholarly activities of faculty, staff, and students.  In this revision, the definition of what constitutes an invention, whether protected by patent or other means, is updated to better reflect discoveries incorporating the latest technologies.  Key policy provisions include ownership of inventions, rights and responsibilities of inventors and the university, and the distribution of invention revenues.  Please note this policy requires completion of the Inventions and Related Property Rights Acknowledgement, formerly the Patent Agreement form, by all academic appointees.  Guidelines regarding implementation of this requirement are available at www.research.cornell.edu/vpr/policies .

Please familiarize yourself with this policy by visiting the University Policy Office Web site.
